Founding Portland Builders
Quarry Expansion
At the turn of the century, Portland Builders acquired a 65-hectare quarry with Malmesbury Horrfels deposits, located just beyond the picturesque Durbanville winelands. Shortly after the acquisition, the quarry underwent significant improvements, including a major facelift, the construction of new offices, the creation of a well-maintained entrance road, and the installation of new crushers.
Expansion into Ready-Mix
In 2001, Portland Group further expanded their business by installing three ready-mix concrete plants on-site and acquiring a fleet of trucks for concrete delivery.
Introduction to Hollowcore
In 2008, we expanded our operations to include the manufacture and installation of precast hollow core slabs. To ensure the highest quality, we invested in state-of-the-art technology from Elematic in Finland.

Environment
Portland’s primary quarry, located in Durbanville, Cape Town, is situated between the Diep River and the Tygerberg mountain range, surrounded primarily by farmland. The river serves as a natural boundary for the northwestern part of the quarry, fostering a biodiverse ecosystem rich in various flora and fauna along its banks.
We are committed to protecting the environment, particularly in addressing the declining water quality of the river system and its potential irreversible effects on local wildlife and the communities that depend on it. We are actively enhancing our efforts to reduce water, air, and ground pollution. While our products are already eco-friendly, we continuously strive to improve our practices to ensure sustainable management of water, energy, and other natural resources for the future.

Portland Quarry operates under the Mine Health and Safety Act, which guides our Loss Control, Safety, and Occupational Health program. Together with our employees, we work diligently to prevent injuries, protect equipment, minimize material wastage, and reduce business interruptions.

Social & Economic Development
Portland Quarry’s Social & Labour Plan is dedicated to uplifting the surrounding community through various initiatives. Our local economic development (LED) project supports the Fisantekraal Centre for Development, and we actively volunteer whenever possible. We also regularly host trainees for on-the-job training.
In addition, we contribute to Olympians Social Development & Education, a non-profit organization that offers mentoring programs for youth and adults in rural and underprivileged areas. OSDE aims to foster commitment among youth, promoting pro-social friendships, strong interpersonal skills, and a renewed sense of hope for the future.
